Rosh Chodesh is the
beginning of a new month in the Jewish calendar. It is
based on when the moon starts being seen again in the
skies, after a period of retreat.
According to Jewish
tradition, when the men in the desert decided to build a
Golden Calf, the women refused to participate in the
creation of an idol. It is because of their refusal that
they were given Rosh Chodesh as their special holiday.
Today, across the USA and all around the
world, many women get together on Rosh Chodesh for study
and prayer, for socializing and spiritual renewal. At
the Family Chavurah, we have the chance to discuss with
other women topics that are dear to us. In a safe
environment, we learn, talk, cry and laugh together,
celebrating the sacred bond and solidarity we share.
